In October of last year, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network launched a brand-new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.
In mid-December, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this endearing family navigate their simple existence.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal promises audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
