The original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the company with Jerry Greenfield, revealed that he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within an individual series highlighting issues the company has been prevented from speaking out about.
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant that has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".
The entrepreneur announced via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options and additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” the founder commented in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace in Palestine and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with the Palestinian people because of its colors, which closely resemble the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company transferring their Israel business over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming product line is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that originally established several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Mr. Cohen indicated how he plans to create additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was prevented from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement comes after partner Mr. Greenfield resigned from the company in September, following decades with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Ben Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that it can actualise the social mission, the values which established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told journalists.
