Individuals from across the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure Donald Trump for his comments following the tragic deaths of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and incurable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's alleged "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since confirmed the arrest of the couple's 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was set at a substantial amount.
The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding the killing of an activist, asking, "Have you no decency? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly stated, "This is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "What a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
Some Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly challenged members in his political party to justify the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal critic of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had previously shown "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of another individual.
Adding a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, noting Trump's request for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
