A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind assisted us verify the video.

We are checking images and video circulated earlier today that show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.

Our starting point to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.

Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were captured.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
