A racing wheel flies off the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with team-mate Piastri at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.
McLaren F1 team leaders Zak Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to opposing racers for the collision between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.
Piastri, ahead of Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, made contact with his team-mate after colliding with the Hulkenberg.
The incident eliminated both team drivers from the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.
Zak Brown, the team's chief executive officer, told Sky Sports that some of the racing at the front was "amateur hour", remarking: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Oscar and he had no business being where he was."
McLaren F1 team principal Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to race."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience don't act with necessary care. Enter the first corner, ensure you avoid harming competitors and carry on."
McLaren indicated that Stella was mentioning both the Sauber driver and Alonso.
Nevertheless, former champion Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he believed the Australian had not demonstrated enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he chose to move inside to try to overtake Norris.
Piastri had a stronger launch than Norris and at first competed on the outer side on the ascending approach to the turn.
However he then cut back in an effort to get a run on his teammate on the exit, only to collide with the Sauber driver.
The McLaren driver said: "Less than perfect but I haven't seen what happened, I attempted to move inside on Lando and we were both quite distant from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."
His teammate said: "I just was struck, right? I was not at fault. Further back events unfolded and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I am unsure. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more people further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."
Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the bin. Just chaotic."
"Piastri turned in pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."
"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Oscar turned in and the contact was unavoidable."
The team will review the incident with their drivers but only after the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.
The team principal said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now concentrating on repairing the cars, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the weekend from there."
"Our team holds a competitive place from our performance point of view so I trust we have the possibility to race, race normally and capitalise on our performance."
"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more care would be beneficial for all involved."
The race was taken by the Max Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now fifty-five points behind Piastri and thirty-three behind of Norris.
The team boss said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
