The child of previous South African President Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terror-linked accusations at the commencement of her legal proceedings in the coastal city of Durban city.

The defendant, 43, is being tried over comments she posted on digital networks several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her parent.

A seven-day period of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and arson, left at least 300 individuals dead and caused damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (2.2 billion pounds).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of fuelling this unrest and confronts allegations of provocation to commit terror acts and civil unrest.

Context of the Case

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the previous president's detention for ignoring a legal directive to testify at an probe into allegations of corruption while he was in power.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has consistently refuted the allegations against her, with her attorney previously calling the government's evidence as weak.

She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an effort to address political grievances with her parent after he established his own political party and ran against the ANC.

Support and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "systematic campaign" of "political and kinship targeting" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A small number of followers from her party, her party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials were present at the hearings inside.

Her legal team has stated that the evidence presented by the state is unconvincing and fails to provide compelling evidence for a criminal finding.

Main Aspects of the Case

  • Online comments from four years ago form the basis of the prosecution's case
  • Violent unrest in 2021 resulted in substantial deaths and economic damage
  • The individual on trial faces multiple counts of incitement to public disorder
  • Judicial trials are projected to proceed for numerous days

The trial continues as the prosecution and defense present their evidence before the judge in what is expected to be a carefully observed judicial process with major political implications for South Africa.
