An esteemed Russian army officer has been declared dead following an detonation in Moscow, according to an investigative body.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an IED concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, resulting in the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

The committee indicated that one theory under investigation suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Location of the Blast

Teams have been dispatched to the scene, which is said to be in a south district of the capital.

Accounts suggest the explosion occurred in a parking area close to a residential building.

Pattern of Targeted Attacks

Since the onset of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a string of Russian military personnel have been attacked within Moscow.

This new event follows other high-profile incidents, such as:

  • General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
  • General Igor Kirillov was killed in late 2024 when a device concealed on a scooter was detonated remotely.

While a source from Ukraine earlier linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are rarely publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.

The conflict has increasingly seen clandestine operations reaching into the heart of the Russian capital.

The investigation into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
