An adolescent from New South Wales has been formally accused for purportedly placing numerous false reports to first responders – a tactic referred to as “swatting” – falsely claiming active shooter situations were occurring at major retail and educational institutions throughout the America.
The Australian federal police laid charges against the teenager on the 18th of December. Officials state he belongs to a suspected decentralised online criminal group concealed by anonymous accounts in order to trigger an “immediate and major emergency response”.
“Often teenage boys ranging in age from 11 to 25, are participating in activities like swatting, doxxing and computer intrusion to achieve status, infamy and prestige in their online groups.”
As part of the case, officers took possession of multiple computers and phones and an illegal weapon located in the juvenile’s possession. This operation was conducted under a specialized task force formed in the final quarter of 2025.
Graeme Marshall, commenting broadly, warned that individuals thinking they can break the law using technology and anonymous accounts are being targeted.
The AFP confirmed it began its probe following intelligence from American law enforcement.
A senior FBI official, from the global operations unit, remarked that the “dangerous and disturbing offense” of fake emergency calls endangered lives and drained critical emergency resources.
“This investigation shows that anonymity online is an myth,” he commented in a joint statement with the AFP.
He further stated, “We are committed to collaborating with international partners, our international partners, and tech companies to locate and prosecute people who misuse digital tools to inflict damage to the public.”
The teenager faces a dozen charges of misuse of telecom services and one count of unauthorised possession of an illegal weapon. The accused could face up to 14 years in prison.
“The police's duty (is|remains) to stopping the harm and suffering members of this online crime network are imposing on the public, operating under the false idea they are anonymous,” Marshall stated.
The youth was scheduled to be presented before a NSW juvenile court on the following Tuesday.
