"A family located in north London is looking for an exceptional and experienced educator to assist their smallest child on his initial journey to growing into an British gentleman."
Looking at this post, you might naturally miss the wording "first-steps" as just an expression.
However, it could be the crucial aspect of this unusual position posting, as it aims to find a teacher for a infant.
Many of applications have already been sent in since the unidentified family posted their search for the highly paid tutor, who needs to be "someone very special".
During the past few weeks, the post has gained interest throughout the news, with several wondering why?
Progressive Approach
A tutoring expert, chief executive of Tutors International, which is helping the family in their search, explained that in spite of first doubt, he viewed the plan "forward-looking", and "innovative".
When he met the family, he mentioned they understood the unconventional character of their requirement, and how young their son is.
However, they explained that they "didn't want to wait any longer" to hire a tutor, as they had waited until their firstborn was five, and by that point "cultural bias had already become established".
What exactly did the family mean by "cultural leaning"?
It's "all-encompassing", Adam responded. "The manner you eat, how you speak".
He stated the older sibling had picked up "really subtle, non-verbal cues" from the family, and had taken on their cultural norms. The family informed him they hoped to prevent history to happen again with their younger child.
The strategy: To hire a British tutor, who must speak with Received Pronunciation, to shape the baby from day one.
Subtle Influence
"Much of the learning at the start here is somewhat absorbed naturally," explained Adam.
It's by means of this natural absorption that the family are expecting the child will acquire the British traits they aim to cultivate.
Adam noted the tutor needed to be someone who attended "the right kinds of schools – comparable categories of schools as the family aspire to send their son to".
"The educator simply needs to be the appropriate candidate, they'll be performing things they may not realize they're doing, just naturally," he added.
Expense Not a Factor
The family told Adam the chosen tutor should preferably also have knowledge of or enthusiasm in horse riding, alpine skiing, creative fields and musical activities so as to inspire the child in a broad spectrum of hobbies.
Furthermore though, he stated the family hoped the tutor to sign up the child on a selection of lessons so the child would be "equestrian training and starting an instrument by the time they are approximately three years old".
In the family's view, guiding their son develop into a "English gentleman" will lead to success and create opportunities.
"Considering the rights and wrongs of that, because it's undoubtedly a class statement," he comments.
Yet, despite all this guidance in "UK identity", could the child pick up what is termed cultural influence from the globally influenced family he resides with regardless?
"Absolutely", answered he. "The parents realize this could fail, but they've merely embraced the attitude of, 'let's give it a go and we'll proceed as quickly as we can', because the price of it is irrelevant," he explained.
Idealistic and Unrealistic
Several in the tutoring industry who express those concerns.
An education leader, CEO and founder of an educational organization, who supplies individual instructors, wrote that "the development of adopting dual cultures, or actually, becoming oneself, is something that must be experienced personally, not engineered."
The expert noted that he had emigrated from the Far East to the Britain at the age of 7 years old, and had been raised experiencing and practicing dual heritages. He progressed to study at Cambridge University.
"The concept that one individual can serve as a representation of UK identity, a person who can in some way transfer the qualities of a UK sophisticate onto a infant child, strikes me as optimistic and unfeasible," he stated.
"Based on my background, engaging a quintessentially British tutor from infancy will will not necessarily create the outcome they hope for.
"I never had such a figure, and yet I have been privileged enough to live several of the opportunities they hope for their son."
He stated: "The truth is, self-identity cannot be imposed from the outside influences; it must be embraced, and it must originate internally."
Buying Britishness
Naturally, English culture is something Adam believes can be instructed – and marketed.
"In my view the situation that the global community views us in this light is something that we should be cherishing|valuing|appreciating
